Let's Talk About It...
Being in tune. It is one of those things that separates musicians from “typical” folks. You know who you are if you’re the one squirming in your seat because one section of the choir (or orchestra, or band) is a quarter step off in one direction or the other. You’re the one who thinks it is better for a choir to be sharp than flat if the piece is in a sharp key. You’re the one who bites their tongue when someone asks you after the concert “Wasn’t that great?” and you are doing mental gymnastics to convince yourself it is a rhetorical question, and the questioner really doesn’t want to hear about the problems in the viola section.
And yet… As is clear from many (many!) Creator articles, music is not the only thing at which church musicians and worship leaders must be accomplished. There’s the relational side of ministry…and that requires being in tune as well. It is a different kind of critical listening, but no less important. Today, be on the (listening) alert for opportunities to apply your listening skill to the non-musical part of your calling. My belief is that it will serve you well…
