It's time to remind everyone that everything is not always what it seems. For instance, one of the most read articles at the Creator Magazine website is David Music's Top 10 Reasons to NOT Sing Hymns. If you haven't read it, you should.
But when social media got hold of that article, there were a lot of snarky comments by people who loved hymns, and resented the "attack." I knew they were having a knee-jerk reaction and hadn't read the article. Why? Because the subheading of the article is "And Why They Are False."
Does this mean that the snarky comment people are [fill in the blank]? Maybe...but there's more to it than that. In a recent phone conversation with one of Creator's writers, we talked about how we are so busy, societally, these days, that we've become "headline" people. We make inferences from the headline rather than take the time to read the story.
In ministry, that's a slippery slope, because ministry involves people. And if you've been in ministry for any length of time, you know that people are complicated. As my mother used to say, "you can't judge a book by its cover..."
