I just have trouble waiting. I'm not one of those people who is always in motion when you see me, but my low tolerance for people who don't get to the point has gotten me in trouble from time to time.
Oh...and I don't like to go backwards when I'm traveling, but I do enjoy going sideways to "get away from the traffic."
And yet...get me in front of a group of amateur musicians, and the act of teaching, for me, involves seeing the big picture. You know...two steps forward and (probably) one step back. In front of pros, I expect microwave results, but I understand that volunteers are a different breed.
Don't misunderstand me. If you come to a rehearsal of mine, you'll see that we work hard, and we work details. But I also am pragmatic, and Sunday comes every seven days. The closer I get to Sunday, the more help I'm willing to provide to ensure that everyone -- musicians, congregation, and, yes, me -- can get the notes and the work out of the way to encounter the Living God.
But I don't know if I could do a start up church. It takes a special talent, and mindset, and yes, a special sort of patience...
